The Champion of the World was confident enough in their first game against Paraguay at the 2010 World cup in Town Stadium in Cape Town , South Africa.

Playing under heavy rain the match began between Italy and Paraguay, many were hoping to see the champions make a killer score, but I have to say Andrea Pirlo’s absence was palpable in Italy’s performance, Andrea Pirlo complained about a sore calf after their friendly match vs. Mexico. But Marcello Lippi still has Antonio Di Natale only that he was on the bench and Alberto Gilardino was in his place, and the same thing happened in Paraguay when Gerardo Martino sent Valdez and Barrios when Paraguayan fans expected to see Roque Santa Cruz and Oscar Cardozo on the field, especially now that Paraguay’s top striker Salvador is still recovering from the gun shot he suffered earlier this year in Mexico.

Even without Pirlo the Italian felt confident enough that they easily won against Paraguay, maybe way too confident that they didn’t see the aerial play Paraguay did when Antolin Alcaraz jumped too easily and sent the Jabulani on the score zone and marked their first goal against the champions of the world in the 39 minutes of the first quarter.

Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was replaced during the 46 minutes by Federico Marchetti after he complained of a back injury, soon the first quarter ended.

In the second half of the game Italy made their first substitution sending Claudio Marchisio for Mauro German Camaronesi and tried a 4-4-2 position for a change.

As the first corner kick by Italy was made by Pepe, it was Daniele De Rossi who was ready to score for Italy on the 63rd minute after Paraguay’s goalkeeper Villar missed the ball. Paraguay replaced Nelson Haedo Valdez for Roque Santa Cruz and Italy replaced Alberto Gilardino for Antonio Di Natale, even with both team’s best strikers they could change the score and the match ended 1-1.

Today for Italy their savior was Daniele De Rossi, but many wonder if their role as World Cup champion will not repeat itself in South Africa, What do you think? Take a look at the photos and video below.
