It was the first appearance for Ghana at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and they proved to the world what great players they are, they were fearless and powerful, strong rivals, they worked so hard that they were among the last 16 teams in Germany.
Today they started with the right foot as well, against Serbia who are playing their first World Cup, sadly their first match in South Africa was not on their side.
On Sunday’s second game it was both teams that were giving their best to score, the first 45 minutes of the first quarter passed without any goals, as the second quarter began Serbia made the move by sending their midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic on the field in the 62nd minute, but he didn’t do much for Serbia his time.
In the 83rd minute he was the one who made contact with the Ghanaian player, on their scoring box. At first it seemed that he saved his team from losing, as the ball was flying over his head, but then tragedy happened as he raised his hand and unfortunately made contact with the ball, which the referee pointed as a penalty shot.
As Serbia’s goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovik got ready so did Ghanaian Asamoah Gyan, who fired a powerful shot over Vladimir’s head. Ghana was winning 1-0 to Serbia.
Serbia was losing their temper as Aleksandar Lokovic earned his second yellow of the day and expelled on the 74th minute.
Rajevac said at a post-match news conference:
"We are happy that an African team has beaten a good European team and we hope that the whole of Africa is celebrating the continent’s first win in the 2010 World Cup. It was a very difficult match and a clash of contrasting styles, so I have to congratulate my players for a valiant effort because they kept going until the end.
"This is the greatest win of my career but I also feel sorry for Serbia, I saw the anguish on the players’ faces after the final whistle. I had a job to do and I did it professionally but I hope my countrymen win their next two games against Germany and Australia, I wish them the best of luck." Rajevac Said.
With the victory we saw from Ghana they became the second team to win a match at this World Cup. Congratulations!! Check out this photos and the video right here.
