Alexi Lalas is a former U.S soccer player who is currently serving as an analyst for ESPN during the World Cup. You can learn all about Alexi and his amazing career below which of course includes of some pictures and a video of him in his element.
The World Cup is in full swing and former U.S soccer player Alexi Lalas, who 17 years ago played in a game against England where he scored a goal that helped the USA win, is a commentator for ESPN. He is giving the world his two cents on team USA and what is going on in Africa. Earlier Lalas stated simply that the USA could compete with England and you know what they did, the final score was a 1-1 draw.
The Birmingham, Michigan born Alexi began playing the sport that became a career for him at the age of eleven. He worked hard training and honing his skills. During his high school years he was named Michigan High School Player, guess he had honed his skills pretty nicely by the time he was a teenager huh. He attended Rutgers University and played for their men’s team. In fact he led the team to a NCAA final four and also a National Championship Game during his four years with them. Alexi earned both the Herman Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year awards.
After college Lalas went on to train and play for the reserve team of Arsenal. In 1994 he went on to play for Italian Serie A club Padova for two seasons before being offered a spot with the new MLS in the USA. His time in the MLS was good but a bit rough. He played for the New England Revolution for two seasons, he was then traded to the MetroStars but only for a season when he was once again traded this time to the Kansas City Wizards. Lalas only spent one season with the Wizards before deciding to retire. However about a year later he came out of retirement to play for the Los Angles Galaxy. He retired permanently in 2004.
During his career Lalas also played for the United States National Team between 1991 and 1998. He had an outstanding career with them and earned him the recognition he deserved including the United States Athlete of the Year for the sport he loved, that is quite an honor.
Here are some interesting tidbits about Alexi. He played hockey too during both his high school and college days. He has been the General Manager for the San Jose Earthquakes. MetroStars and Galaxy. Lalas is also a singer. He was part of the band Gypsies which released a couple of albums. Alexi went on to release a solo album.
Former U.S soccer player Alexi Lalas had an amazing career but he also had a wonderful family to cheer him on. He has been married to Anne Rewey since 2002 and the couple have two children. Seems like one lucky guy to me.
