The Highland Park High School girls basketball team has had their best season in 26 years and have been raising funds to attend the competition in Scottsdale for about a year. But administrators have stepped in and say they are not allowing the team to participate. This decision has everyone from the parents, to the news stations, to celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg weighing in!

The District 113 Superintendent George Fornero maintains that the boycott is only for the safety of the students, and not a political statement. Sarah Palin’s Arizona immigration law support has been well known and she disagrees. In a letter to parents the school states:

“We cannot commit at this time to playing at a venue where some of our students’ safety or liberty might be placed at risk because of state immigration law.”

The former vice presidential candidate quickly made her views known. On her Facebook page show called it, “ridiculous and totally unfair to the girls who just want to play ball.” She can definitely empathize with the Illinois school’s team, as she used to be a star basketball player. And she feels they are turning this school sporting event into a place to air their political views, which makes her upset!

“An economic and political boycott of one of our sister states is not a way to secure our borders.”

She also made this comparison:

“Apparently the school has no problem sending kids on trips to China, which has a population control policy that is anti-girl in practice – contributing to female infanticide and abandonment and sex-selective abortions. So, is China – with its many serious human rights violations (too many to list here) – ‘aligned’ with the ‘values and beliefs’ of the school? But our sister-state of Arizona is not? Really?”

Quite an analogy she makes! This sure is a controversial decision, even if it is for the safety of the players. Tell me what you think about the thoughts of Sarah Palin and Arizona’s tournament being skipped? Also check out these photos and video.
