LaShawn Merritt failed three doping tests from October 2009 to January 2010, the alleged cause – dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA, a steroid banned by the World Anti Doping Agency and a substance that is present in the male sexual enhancement called Exenze. Although his sentence hasn’t been confirmed, he has agreed not to compete until then and his medal won during that period of time are not in danger. The very bad part of this is that his reputation will be overshadowed for a long time if not forever.

"Any penalty that I may receive for my action will not overshadow the embarrassment and humiliation that I feel inside." LaShawn said.

LaShawn Merritt Biography

  • LaShawn Merritt was born on June 27, 1968 in Portsmouth, Virginia.
  • He studied at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, he later went to East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.
  • His brother Antwan Merritt died in November, 1989 after he was pushed off a five story window. LaShawn dedicated each of his victories to his brother.
  • Today LaShawn is at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he is pursuing a degree in Business Administration.
  • At the 2004 World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy he won the gold in 400m, 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay.
  • In 2004 he was named IAAF Student Of The Week.
  • At the 2006 World Indoor championships in Moscow, Russia he won gold in the 4×400 relay.
  • At the 2006 World Athletics Final in Germany he won the bronze in the 400m.
  • At the 2006 World Cup in Athens, Greece he won the gold in 400m and 4×400 relay.
  • 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan he won the silver in 400m, at the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart, Germany he won the gold in 400m.
  • At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China he won the gold in 400m and 4×400 relay.
  • At the 2009 World Championships Athletic in Berlin, Germany he won the gold in 400m and 4x400m.
