Natalia Lavrova: Russian Olympic Gymnast (Biography)

Rhythmic Gymnast

The tragic news about Lavrova’s death shocked not just gymnastics, but the world. Natalia, 25, along with her younger sister Rossiy,a who was 24 years old, and the one who was driving collided with another car when her car skidded in the road and into the incoming lane, throwing them off the road, and then her car burst into flames. The terrible accident happened on a highway near her hometown of Penza Oblast, southwest of Russia. Police reports said Natalia and Rossiya died instantly. The driver in the other car was seriously hurt. Our deepest condolences to her family, our prayers are with you through this terrible time.

Natalia Lavrova’s Biography

  • Natalia was born in Penza, Russia on August 4, 1984.
  • She started practicing gymnastics at a very early age, in fact she was just five years old when she began her lesson under the direction of Olga Stebenev.
  • After she finished her high school studies in Penza she went to Penza State Pedagogical University.
  • In 1998 she joined the Russian National team.
  • Her club was the Dinamo.
  • Natalia left Olga Stebenev sometime between 1999, this time she chose Tatyana Vasilyeva.
  • In 1999 she won first place at the World Championships in the group exercise event.
  • On September 30, 2000 Natalia joined the Russian Olympic team at the Summer Olympics in Sidney, Australia where she won her first gold medal in the rhythmic gymnastics group event.
  • She was awarded with the Honored Masters of Sports in Russia.
  • She won her second gold medal at the the 2004 Olympics in Athens, this second medal granted her the title of the first rhythmic gymnast that ever won two Olympic medals.
  • Natalia’s height was 5’7” and weight was 112.4 pounds.
  • Besides her career as a gymnast she was also a coach for her Club Dinamo and for the Russian National team.
