Lane Bryant Ad: Too Racy for Prime Time?

April 23, 2010

Fox Networks and ABC have been giving trouble to one of their advertisers this week as they have been stalling and putting off showing a Lane Bryant Ad. The commercial is for plus-size lingerie for women, and is certainly no racier than any of the Victoria Secret commercials on prime-time these days! Check out the full story with video below!

The lingerie company first secured the spot weeks ago, but when it came down to it, the networks stalled, and requested editing to meet certain standards. The Networks, in their own defense, said that the Victoria Secret commercials that aired during the same hour were specifically produced to meet the standards set for “American Idol.”

The Lane Bryant Ad producers, however, are crying foul. After having to fight the networks for the spot, they shellacked both ABC and Fox on a company blog where they detailed their grievances against the ‘biased’ networks.

They “demanded excessive re-edits and rebuffed it three times before relenting to air it during the final ten minutes of American Idol, but only after we threatened to pull the ad buy.” said the lingerie designer during the online rant.

“Yes, these are the same networks that have scantily-clad housewives so desperate they seduce every man on the block — and don’t forget Bart Simpson, who has shown us the moon more often than NASA — all in what they call ‘family hour.’ … Does this smack of a double standard? Yep. It does to us, too.”

The networks aren’t buying any of it though. They say that the lingerie producer is just milking the situation for the media hype, and that it was merely acting in accordance with broadcasting regulations when requesting edits for the spot.

It’s a tough call here, but I have to think that there’s no reason for the networks to hold back on airing this commercial unless they thought they would get in trouble. After all, the model is a beauty, and would no doubt get some good reviews from the male audience!

Do you think the networks were biased in their decision to delay the Lane Bryant Ad? Or is the lingerie company just working this for publicity? Let me know your opinion in the comment section!
