US Marshal, English Detective, and Superhero are the acclaimed roles that have been played by the talented and versatile Robert Downey, and Wizard can now be added to that list. Yes, Disney and director Sam Mendes are are daring to make a prequel to the timeless American classic ostentatiously titled Oz The Great and Powerful. On a hot-streak in his career, the Iron Man star is apparently ‘circling’ the role for the new movie. The plot will focus on the story of the man behind the curtain, and how he went from traveling circus ringleader to the most powerful man in Oz.
Sam Mendes was tipped to be the director of the new movie after his current project, the 23rd James Bond movie, was put on hold. Mendes, with 9 movies under his belt, made a splash entry onto the Hollywood scene with his first movie American Beauty starring Kevin Spacey. Since then he’s been Hollywood’s golden-boy director making blockbusters such as Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Kite Runner, Revolutionary Road, and most recently the well reviewed ‘Away We Go’ starring John Krasinski from The Office.
As far as actors go, it could definitely be argued that Hollywood’s wunderkind is Robert Downey. A wizard role in the new 3D movie will certainly be a new avenue for the talented actor, and if he brings his usual charm to the set it will no doubt be a success.
But the new movie isn’t the only thing coming out of Oz these days. Apparently, there is a completely unrelated movie titled the Witches of Oz being produced that will essentially be a sequel! It will feature a grown up Dorothy in New York who somehow brings Oz to the Big Apple. Can’t vouch for that one!
