Meet Lauren Summa, the former athletic manager for Hofstra University’s football team. She is claiming that she was sexually harassed by players on numerous occasions. See photos and a biography of Lauren here.
Lauren was hired as the team manager for the Hofstra football team and handled clearing the practice field of equipment as well as record keeping. Lauren is claiming that she was sexually harassed “during every bus trip that she made in the 2006 season”.
Lauren told the Associated Press:
“I was totally humiliated, embarrassed and ashamed. I never thought I would be in this position in my life. I thought the authority figures would step up.”
One instance of the harassment included a buss ride home from the team’s game against the University of Massachusetts. An assistant coach put the film “Shadowboxer” in the DVD player on the bus. The movie has sexually explicit scenes between a black man and a white woman. Summa is claiming that players were yelling and screaming obscenities during those scenes and one player yelled at her, “This is what you white women want.” After Lauren complained, the coach turned off the video. Players then started shouting for the coach to play the video and yelled, “We want boobies!”
Lauren had told head coach of the football squad, Dave Cohen, about the harassment. He told her that proper action would be taken, but nothing ever came of it and the harassment went on.
She was let go from the athletic staff in spring 2007, and Lauren is claiming that they let her go because she was complaining about the harassment.
She has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the university.
Lauren Summa is 23 years old. She is a former Miss Teen Pennsylvania from Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She was part of the cross country team while she was a freshman at Hofstra, and graduated in May 2006 with a degree in journalism. She currently is a graduate student at Hofstra, studying speech communications.
