Jockey

Greville Michael Wilson Starkey was born in Litchfield, Staffordshire, England on December 21, 1939. His father worked in a factory, he started his training as a jockey in 1955 with Tom Jones and his first victory took place in Pontefract on Russian Gold in 1956. In 1957 he won in the Great Jubilee Handicap on Orinthia.

From 1963 to 1969 he rode for John Oxley. In 1964 he won in Epson Oaks, 1965 riding on Fonseca he won the Danish Derby, in 1966 he won the Ascot Gold Cup.

Then from 1970 to 1974 he rode for Henry Cecil and later he rode for the next fourteen years for Guy Hardwood; in 1975 he rode Star Appeal winning at the Prix l’Arc de Triumphe and the Eclipse Stakes; in 1977 he won the Sun Chariot Stakes; in 1978 he won the Ascot Gold Cup, the Jockey Club Stakes and riding Shirley Height they won the Epsom Oaks.

In 1979 he rode Young generation winning the Lockinge Stakes he also won the Musidora Stakes; 1980 the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere; 1981 Grosser Preis von Baden, 1982 King george VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Prix Vermeille, Gordon Richards Stakes.

In 1985 won Prix Du Moulin de Longchamp, John Porter Stakes, Sussex Stakes. In 1986, Ebor Handicap Jockey Club Stakes. He lost the Derby riding Dancing Brave, but together they won the 2000 Guineas. Dancing Brave died in 1999.

In 1989, his last year racing he won the Nassau Stakes, Henry II Stakes and the Linfield Derby Trial. His last race was on November 4, 1989 riding Rock Hopper.

He got married to Christine Simpson in 1974, together they had two daughters. After they separated he began dating Julie Elliot. Greville was a respectful and famous jockey in England and the world, but he was also known as a practical joker who had the ability to imitate the sound of dogs barking in various breeds. He died on Wednesday April 14th, 2010 after his 8 year battle with cancer at age 70. Several tributes are being held in his memory.
