Rapper Jay-Z is the proud owner of the Sports Clubs chain 40/40, but now the Dominican Republic has one too, only that is not owned by Jay-Z, who is suing the owner for copying the name, who turned out to be Boston Red Sox’s David “Big Papi” Ortiz. Keep reading to know all the details about this story plus take a look at the photos and video below.
Jay –Z and his long time friend Juan Perez are the owners of many sports bar and lounges that have spread in many states so far, the name 40/40 is after the achievement in baseball of having performed 40 homeruns, and stolen 40 bases all in one season. Among these players the names of Alex Rodriguez, Jose Canseco Alfonso Sorriano among other. Jay-Z who is a fervernt Baseball fan comments about his clubs.
"I love sports and wanted to create an environment that is conducive to my lifestyle, while being able to watch the games at the same time," said Jay-Z.
The environment of the clubs is overwhelming, and delightful, great music, delicious food and drinks plus absolutely terrific big screen TV’s where you can watch some superb games. The clubs have spread in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Chicago, Tokyo and soon in Macau.
David “Big Papi”Ortiz was born in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and is a two time World Series Champion, five time All Star Selection, and awarded with the Sporting News Hitter of the Decade award. He has hit over 41 homeruns in 2004, 47 in 2005, 54 in 2006 sure that is one hell of a record, over 40 in a season that is, that is why when he owned his “Forty Forty” club in Santo Domingo Jay- Z screamed “Hey Papi, there ain’t no way that gonna happen and I am suing”, sure this was not his exact words, but I was just dying to say that.
Jay-Z thinks that “Big Papi” wants to use the name of his 40/40 Clubs’ reputation to attract the attention to his Forty Forty in Santo Domingo.
"Jay-Z and Juan Perez own 40/40 Clubs in New York City, Atlantic City and Las Vegas and have plans to open further venues in Tokyo and Macau. They have accused Ortiz of trading on the fame, value and goodwill of their name through his club Forty/Forty and its website, www.fortyforty.net, which they say has caused their business ‘marketplace confusion and damage,’ the lawsuit said.
"’David Ortiz is fully aware of plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 Club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions long before he opened his infringing Forty/Forty Club,’ said the lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court.
Jay-Z filed a lawsuit against David Ortiz on Thursday April 15th that include the forfeit of using the 40/40 name and over $5,000,000 in damages.
