Matt James just signed to join the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana under the Direction of former University of Cincinnati Brian Kelly, but this dream was suddenly vanished with the tragic death of Matt on April 2nd when he fell from the fifth floor balcony at a Days Inn hotel in Panama Beach, Florida.

Police reports indicated that Matt was allegedly "drunk and belligerent" on the spring break trip he took along with some of his best friends, and Matt was in his room, leaning on the balcony rail apparently pointing his finger at the people in the room next door when he lost his balance and fell. He was already dead when the ambulance got there.

Matt was born in April 1992, he was about to turn 18 years old and he was the son of Peggy and Jerry James. He was a senior at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and a star with the Bombers and a great varsity player. He also played at the U.S Army All American Bowl earlier this year in Texas.

He received USA Today First Team All America Honors recently and the Anthony Munoz Offensive Lineman Of The Year Award this February. Ever since his sophomore year he attracted recruits’ attention, which was why he received many offers from Florida State, LSU, Tennessee, Ohio and North Carolina among others, but it was Notre Dame with his long time friend and Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly who finally signed with Matt in February.

Matt was 291 pounds and 6’8” but he was remembered by the people who knew him as a “Giant Teddy Bear” who never put his interest above others. His kindness, sweetness and humility will be treasured in everybody’s heart.

Our thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends and classmates through this difficult time.
