Maureen Decker is the former Kindergarten teacher of Tiger Woods from 1981-1982 at Cerritos Elementary in Anaheim, California. Mrs. Decker has been a teacher for the last 24 years, she is now a 69 year old retired teacher who is well known and respected among colleagues, former students and parents. She was a loving and caring teacher with all of her students and with Tiger was not an exception, who remembers him dearly with his cute smile and big glasses, who even at a very young age was a perfectionist.
Maureen has always been a quite healthy lady, but that changed when she heard her former kindergartener Tiger Woods say in an interview by Barbara Walters how much he suffered from alleged racism during his years in school. Since that day her heart aches, not because this happened, on the contrary, no such thing ever did. Tiger nor his parents ever reported any incident that happened to him. Due to this she started to investigate with other colleagues at Cerritos as well as directives like Donald Hill and all of them came to the same conclusion, no such attack took place. Even former parents of Maureen’s students who were classmates with Tiger said they never heard of any incident.
Maureen’s health was affected in a great manner, she has been suffering from migraines, high blood pressure and stress ever since Tiger’s allegations which he meticulously described in Charles Barkley’s book Who’s Afraid Of A Black Man?, where Tiger said:
"I became aware of my racial identity on my first day of school, on my first day of kindergarten. A group of sixth graders tied me to a tree, spray-painted the word ‘nigger’ on me, and threw rocks at me. That was my first day of school. And the teacher really didn’t do much of anything." said Tiger
After almost five years of trying to get in touch with Tiger by letters and phone calls that were not answered, she decided to hire attorney Gloria Allred.
Mrs. Decker doesn’t want to sue Tiger, but wants his private and public apology, for she thinks she was a great teacher to him and to any other child she ever had the pleasure to teach.
