Meet Wanda Wilson. Just who is she? She’s Denard Span’s mother, and you’ll never guess what happened to the poor woman as she watched her son at a spring training game Wednesday. Find out the details here, plus photos and video below.
Wanda Wilson was on hand to watch her son Denard of the Minnesota Twins play Wednesday in Tampa during a spring training game against the New York Yankees. She was there with friends and family, undoubtedly beaming with pride. All of a sudden….
As Denard came to the plate, he hit a foul ball that was headed right for Ms. Wilson in the stands – her seat was near third base. The ball ends up hitting her hard in the chest. Imagine what is going through Denard’s mind as he sees this happening.
“As the ball was in the air, I realized that it was going after my mom. When I saw her go down, I just couldn’t do nothing but go after her.”
Oh my, the horror of seeing your mother hit like that and you’re the one who did it.
She eventually had an EKG done, which was normal, but she refused to go to the hospital. Span returned to play but then ended up leaving the game in the third inning to be with his mother, who was doing a-okay, and even tweeted later – ‘My mom is feeling ok right now!’
Of the ordeal, Wilson said:
“It happened so fast, you couldn’t do anything. I was kind of awe. But God is good, I’m OK.”
Denard grew up in Tampa and makes his home there when not playing during the regular season.
For Wanda Wilson, Denard Span’s mother, that’s one game she surely won’t forget, eh? Thank goodness she’s okay. It could have been a lot worse. Check out photos and video of the hit below.
