Fans of the Phoenix Mercury are none too happy with the recent developing news that Pondexter is reportedly on her way to the New York Liberty, as part of a trade that involves three teams.
A source close to the deal revealed the details to The Associated Press but did not want to be identified since it has not been officially announced.
Here’s how it purportedly will go down. The Phoenix Mercury will send Pondexter to New York in exchange for Cathrine Kraayeveld and Shameka Christon. The latter two will then be sent to the Chicago Sky and they in turn will send Candice Dupree to the Valley of the Sun. Whatevs. I’m not a happy camper about this. What are the powers that be over at the Mercury camp think they’re doing sending Cappie off like that. Wahhh. Bad move, Mercury. Sigh. It looks like it is a done deal.
As a biography, calls California her birthplace but grew up in Chicago. The 27-year-old played high school basketball in Chicago, and later went on to attend Rutgers University where she was the recipient of several accolades for her achievements on the court. Most notably, she was named the Big East Rookie of the Year in 2003.
The Phoenix Mercury drafted Pondexter (second overall) in 2006. With the incredible skills she displayed on the court, her first year as an WNBA player resulted in being picked to play on the Western Conference All Star Team. What an honor!
The following year, she was instrumental in the Phoenix Mercury’s quest for that championship title and was rewarded with the MVP award during the 2007 Finals.
She was a member of the 2008 USA Women’s Basketball team who came away with the Gold Medal at the Beijing Olympic Games.
In 2009, we saw the Merc reign victorious yet again, winning another championship title after beating the Indiana Fever. Check out her amazing stats with the Mercury here. Oh, and here’s a little tidbit about Cappie – did you know she sports a WNBA tattoo on her right shoulder?
Best of luck to you Cappie. We will miss you! Check out more Cappie Pondexter photos and video below.
