Shane Carwin makes the news today, not only for his win last night over Frank Mir at UFC 111, but for his upcoming bout against Brock Lesnar in July. Read more about this developing story here plus photos and video below.
Yes, MMA fans, it’s true! It will be a Shane Carwin, Brock Lesnar showdown come this July 3rd in Las Vegas, as they headline UFC 116.
Dana White, UFC President, made the announcement of the main event today, saying:
“I didn’t want to have talk to these guys – especially this guy (Carwin). This guy has been dogged more times in a half year than any fighter we’ve had. We had already made it an interim title fight, and we didn’t want to go back and say ‘never mind.’ It was already done. The wheels were in motion, so we kept it an interim title fight. Now these guys will fight.”
Additionally, rumor has it that Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyamawill co-headline the event.
As far as last night’s bout, Carwin reigned victorious by way of TKO in the first round over Frank Mir, making the 35-year-old “interim heavyweight champ“. While Carwin has not had a fight lasting a little more than two minutes, this one took just a wee bit longer at 3:48 when it was stopped. He admitted that he was a bit edgy before last night’s fight, saying:
“I was definitely a little more nervous this time than I normally tend to be. It could’ve been the year off. The other thing was my wife had to stay at home with our new daughter. She’s usually here all week and makes me laugh, and keeps me very calm.”
Carwin’s wife Lani gave birth to their daughter Alexia just last month. I am sure we will see Lani on hand in Las Vegas come Independence Day weekend.
