Obama Donates Nobel Prize Money to Charities

March 14, 2010

News confirms that the President has made good on his promise to give away his winnings, as Obama donates Nobel prize money to ten different charities. While no doubt a worthy cause, this has stirred up resent from some tax payers saying that the U.S. Government and the individual tax payer could use that money just as much (if not more) than some of these charities! After his controversial win in October, 2009, he made an oath to give his winnings to worthy causes, but at that time the oath was questioned because any winnings a President makes actually belong to the government, and therefore would have to get the government’s approval before being charitably given. Now, as he seems to have jumped that hurdle, people are questioning why the President didn’t donate the money to the federal deficit.

Before jumping on the nay-sayer’s bandwagon just yet, let’s take a look at the list of charities who Obama donates Nobel peace prize money to.

$250,000 to Fisher House
$200,000 to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund
$125,000 to College Summit
$125,000 to the Posse Foundation
$125,000 to the United Negro College Fund
$125,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund
$125,000 to the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation
$125,000 to the American Indian College Fund
$100,000 to AfriCare
$100,000 to the Central Asia Institute

Ok, the U.S. may be in a deplorable financial state, but do we really need $200,000 more than Haiti right now? I don’t think so. In fact, I don’t think there’s any country out there that needs money more than Haiti right now. And the Fisher House? That is, needless to say, a quality organization that will use the money to house the families of veterans receiving treatment at major military medical centers. Definitely a good cause.

So, while I couldn’t agree more that penny-pinching is vital to the government right now, I think this donation is a good reminder for America that there are still many others out there much worse off than we are.
