A well known online betting agency has been denied in its offer to be a sponsor for Tiger Woods. Paddy Power offered the golfer’s managers a 5-year $75-Million deal, but the offer was rejected Friday. This was the first major sponsorship offer the embattled golfer, who has lost most of his major sponsors after the scandal of his infidelities broke news.
Before his fall from grace, golf’s number one had sponsorship deals with the likes of Gatorade, Accenture, AT&T, and Nike and was earning over $100-Million a year through them. Now, after losing all of these save Nike, it’s surprising to hear that he’s turning any deal down! Continue reading below for the full story, as well as pictures and video!
Not discouraged, the Irish bookmaker says they will continue their pursuit.
“Paddy Power remains keen to work with Tiger Woods, and will re-engage with IMG [ Woods’s management company]. An enhanced offer will be made, the details of which will remain confidential.”
It is unclear what motivated Tiger Woods’ Paddy Power rejection, whether it was based on the nature of the company, or the size of the paycheck. Some are saying that Tiger rejected the offer in order not to be associated with gambling, being sure to keep what’s left of his image clean. It’s also possible that the denial was more a matter of quantity, not quality.
This would be a good time to get a sponsorship deal, as rumors have been spreading about a return to golf sooner rather than later. At his much publicized apology, he gave the impression that a return to golf was almost certain, although maybe not this year.
Either way, this could mark the beginning of the onslaught of sponsors looking bet on a recovery of the golfer’s image. Do you think Tiger Woods’ Paddy Power rejection was a smart move? Speak your mind in the comment section!
