Bill Demong: U.S. Nordic Combined Skier Wins Olympic Gold Medal

Bill Demong’s dream of getting an Olympic gold medal finally came true when he won the 10k hill (individual) on February 25th in Vancouver. Fellow American Skier Johnny Spillane won the silver and Bernhard Gruber from Austria the bronze. This a historic win for the Nordic Combined team since it is their first gold in history. Congratulations Bill!!

Bill Demong was born on March 29, 1980 in Vermontville, New York. His first time on skis was at age three, he first started on cross country skis, and by age five he was already a member of the Ski Club in Lake Placid, NY. It was when Bill was at practice that his coach showed him a ski Jumping video, that is when he decided to switch to Nordic combined. By the time he was 10 years old he was already giving awesome jumps, When he was 14 he performed his first normal hill jump, when he was 17 he earned his spot on the U.S Olympic Team and then he was on his way to the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan where he finished 34th (individual) and 10th (Team). At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino he finished 15th (individual), 25th (sprint) and 7th (team).

At the FIS Nordic Combined Ski Championships Bill got himself a medal palette, by scoring the three medals – silver 15k (individual) in 2007, gold at 10k (individual) in 2009 and bronze 10k (individual normal hill) in 2009 as well. Bill arrived at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he won the silver medal in the team large hill 4X5k and went away with his first Olympic gold medal at the individuals.

  • He wakes up really early and kept on exercising for the rest of the day, this boy is restless.
  • He fell into a shallow pool in 2002 and fractured his skull, he was out for a year.
  • During his recovery period he learned carpentry, that helped to improve his short memory that had been affected after his diving incident.
  • He was disqualified when he forgot his team bib at the 2009 World Championships in the team event.
  • His gold medal at the large hill event in the 2009 World championships was dedicated to his team, for his previous disqualification.
  • He practices cycling, in fact he loves it so much that he even competed professionally at the Tour de France.
  • He also loves to go salmon fishing in Alaska.
  • Wherever he goes he carries his hot sauce and peanut butter with.
  • He has been featured in the Alka- Seltzer TV commercial.
