Katherine Reutter

Katherine was born on July 30, 1988 in Champaign, Illinois. She went to Centennial High School and graduated in 1996. Katherine learned how to skate when she was four years old. She loved to skate fast, so jumps and all the figure skating pirouettes were never appealing to her. She first started competing when she was nine years old at inline skating competitions, but when her club got shut down she turned to the ice.

Her dad helped, trained and motivated her and the flexible schedule at school also made it easier to train, although it required a bit of effort, commitment and hard work for her. But she got her reward back by getting in the U.S Olympic Education Center in Marquette. By 2007 she was training with the Olympic Team in Salt Lake City under the direction of Jae Su Chun, Jimmy Jang and Laurent Daignault. Katherine still lives in Utah.

Besides her Speed skating career, Katherine manages to take time to be at the Today Show, and Comedy Central to name a few. She has also appeared in the Verizon Wireless commercial. Katherine’s sponsors are The Champaign Police Dept., Oakley, Power Bar, Verizon, Nike and Lasik. Katherine was asked to join the DWTS team just like her fellow speed skater Apolo Ohno did, but she turned it down.

Among her great achievements:

  • She was the Champion at the 2005 National Champion Junior division, finishing 2nd overall.
  • Champion at the 2007 U.S Junior championships, finished 4th overall.
  • Silver (1000 & 1500m ) Bronze (relay) at the 2008 U.S National Championships
  • Gold at the 2009 U.S. National Championships in Germany plus Silver at Bulgaria.
  • At the 2009 World Championships in Austria she ended up 4th, and Bronze at the World Team Championships in Herenveen.
  • Later she was selected with the Olympic Team, W Magazine got an interview with her just days before the Open Ceremony.
  • At the 2010 Winter Olympics she had a great time in the 500m (44.187 ) in the quarter finals, setting an Olympic record that was later broken by Wang Weng, sending Katherine to 4th place.
  • At the 3000m (relay) her team finished 2nd.

Now we will have to wait to see how this U.S Speed Skater will do at the 1000 and 1500m, do you think Katherine will get the gold?
