****UPDATE*****

Congratulations to Evan Lysacek, who just won the Olympic gold medal this evening! Lysacek, who did what he needed to do and skated a superb free program, came out on top with an overall score of 257.67 points. That beat out Evgeni Plushenko of Russia, who ended up with 256.36 points overall and Japan’s Daisuke Takahashi took the bronze with an overall score of 247.23 points. American Johnny Weir (who I might add should have received a higher score), ended up in sixth.

….And now back to the original post.

It all started with a Christmas gift given by his grandmother that awakened this young athlete’s desire to skate, but nobody ever thought that those skates would be the beginning of a very successful career.

Evan Lysacek was born on June 4, 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, but was raised in Naperville by his father Don and mother Tanya along with his sisters Christina and Laura. He studied at Neuqua Valley High School where he graduated in 2003, with honors, having achieved several academic awards.

Evan and his coach Frank Caroll trained in El Segundo, California where Evan moved in 2003, but before California and Frank Caroll, Evan participated in many juvenile championships by the hand of Candice Brown. In the 1995-1996 season he won 1st place at the Junior Olympics and 2nd at the Upper Great Lakes Regional; then came the novice championships in 1996-1997. He won 2nd place at the upper Great Lakes Regional and 1st at the Midwestern Sectional, 1st at the Junior Grand Prix in Stockholm and at the North America Challenge. He also won the 2002 Triglav Trophy.

In 2003 he was the champion at the Junior Grand Prix in Croatia and Japan; sadly he couldn’t win the Figure Skating Championships in 2003, one title he was longing to obtain. In 2005 he landed in 5th place at the Cup of Russia and 3rd at the World Championships.

Evan made it onto the Olympic team along with fellow skater Johnny Weir, unfortunately Evan got sick with a stomach flu and had to be in bed, he competed the next day and he ranked third that night and fourth overall.

He also won 2nd place at the NKH trophy, the next year he took the title at the Cup of China; 1st at the 2007 Four Continents and 3rd at the Grand Prix Finals. He won 1st place at the 2008 Japan Open and at the U.S Figure Skating Championships and 3rd at Skate Canada.

The 2009- 2010 season began by winning 1st places at World Championships, World Team Trophy, Grand Prix Final and Skate America, 2nd at the 2009 Cup of China and at the Four Continents Championships; and in 2010 he took the 2nd place at the U.S Championships. Now we will have to wait for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he is so ready to take the gold home, how do you think he will do?
