It’s another Olympic Gold medal for Martina Sablikova, as she reigned victorious in the 5000 meter event today. She completed the race in 6 minutes, 50.91 seconds. Germany’s Stephanie Beckert took the silver with a time of 6:51.39 and Canada’s own Clara Hughes came away with the bronze, finishing at 6:55.73. How did the Americans fare? Jilleanne Rookard took 8th and Maria Lamb wound up in 15th.

The Czech speed skater, whose time was four minutes 02.53 in the event, was a full two seconds in front of Stephanie Beckert (Germany), who came away with the silver and Canada’s Kristina Groves took the bronze.
Next up for Sablikova is the 5,000 meter event, which will be held on Wednesday. She is expected to take the gold in that event as well.

Sablikova’s win gives the Czech Republic their first gold medal in the Vancouver games.

As a biography, here is what we know about Martina Sablikova. The Czech cutie is 22 years of age – born in May of 1987. She is a native of Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic. She stands at 5’7″ and weighs 115 pounds.
How did she get her start into skating? It was through her mother, Eva Sablikova. Her friend was married to coach Petr Novak, and that is how Martina became acquainted with the sport.
It wasn’t long before she was competing. She made her Olympic debut at the 2006 Torino Olympics, and placed fourth in 5000 meter event. From 2007 through 2009, she was the reigning world distance title holder in the 5000 meters event. She has taken Gold at the World Championships in the 3000 meters in 2007 and 2009. Heading into the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, she was the favorite to win Gold in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters events. One Gold now under her belt, and possibly the next one will be captured on Wednesday.
