Andrea Henkel was born on December 10, 1977 in Ilmenau, Germany. Her parents are Elke and Matthias, she has one sister, Manuela. Actually by the time Andrea was born that part of Germany was still called West Germany. She was raised in Grossbreitenbach, that is where she started her career at age four only at first she followed in her sister’s footsteps Cross Country Skiing. Biathlon came when she was eleven years old. When the Berlin Wall was taken down she went to train at Oberhof in 1991 and graduated in 1996. Andrea is also a first sergeant of the Bundeswehr. The Sport soldier trained in Oberhof, under the direction of the co-coach of the biathlon team, Gerald Hönig. Andrea is a four time champion in the junior world, the champion made her debut in March 1995 in the biathlon World Cup and got in the German World Tour since the 1998/1999 season. Her first of 14 singles victories was on December 1999 at Pokljuka.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Andrea won the gold in individual and in relay, the first great success of her career. After three years of losing titles, Andrea surprisingly won the gold in the 15 km at the 2005 World Championships in Hochfilzen, becoming the first biathlete Olympic champion and world champion. She savored victory at the 2006-2007 World Cup overall, making that the most successful season of her career, having previously held the rating in the single discipline of its own.

At the 2008 World Championships in Östersund, Andrea Henkel saw her double victory in sprint and pursuit. In 2010 she landed 2nd at the World ranking, she used to be in fifth place last year.
