Figure Skater Johnny Weir

Johnny Weir was born on July 2, 1984 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Johnny’s parents John and Patti along with his brother Brian moved to Newark, Delaware where Johnny, at age 12, began skating. In 2007 Johnny moved to Lyndhurst, New Jersey where he began his professional training by the hand of Priscilla Hill.

Weir studied at Newark High school, later he went to the University of Delaware but quit in order to focus on his skating career. Johnny Weir won his first competition in 2001 at the World Junior Championships putting the United States in the first place, and second overall.

In 2003 Johnny moved to the Skating Club in New York, and entered in the U.S Figure Skating Championships, where he won the gold  against Matthew Savoie and Michael Weiss. The next year at the Championships he ended up in fifth place.

In 2005 Johnny Weir won two Grand Prix Tittles, a NHK trophy, a Trophee Eric Bompard and the silver medal in the Cup of Russia and later was fifth place in the 2005 World championships due to a foot injury.

In the consecutive years Johnny Weir has won seventh place in Canada, third in Russia, first in the 2006 U.S figure skating and second in the winter Olympics, but a back injury placed him seventh in the World championships and eight in 2007.

in 2008 Johnny Weir left Priscilla Hill  and joined Galina Zmievkaya and won the gold in the Cup of China and in the Cup of Russia as well; that year Johnny Weir was 4th place overall. In 2009 Johnny Weir got sick with a stomach virus that kept him in off skating for a while since he lost a lot of weight in a single day and out of the US World Team. Later he landed fourth in the Rostelecom Cup, won the silver in NHK Trophy and bronze in the Grand Prix in Japan. In the 2010 U.S National championships Johnny Weir ended in the third place.

Johnny Weir’s amazing talent has called the attention of filmmakers like James Pellerito (Maree), who filmed  a documentary about Johnny called “Pop Star on Ice” in 2009. This year Johnny will be in his own reality show “Be Good Johnny Weir” that aired January 18 on the Sundance channel also by James Pellerito.

Johnny speaks Russian and a little French, but Russian is a language that he learned by himself; his interest in learning the language is because he totally adores Russia and all the Russian culture. Even though there have been rumors about Johnny’s sexuality he hasn’t made any statements  accepting whether he is or not gay.
