Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao has filed a defamation suit against Floyd Mayweather Jr, and his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. for their claims that he used performance enhancing drugs. Get the scoop below plus see photos and video.
Manny Pacquiao filed the suit in Las Vegas against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sr, also naming Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer (Mayweather Jr.’s promoters) defendants as well.
Daniel Petrocelli, Pacquiao’s lawyer, said, “I can’t explain why these people are making these recklessly false statements,” “This is completely independent of whether or not the fight gets made.”
Pacquiao, meanwhile, maintains that he has proof that Floyd Jr accused him of PED use. “Liars go to hell. They should be man enough and own up to their words,”
He added that Floyd Jr also said that “the Philippines has the best (performance) enhancement drugs. It’s all over the internet. They all went on record and there is no denying as to who is lying or not.”
Regardless of the legal action Pacquiao has taken, Bob Arum, his promoter, has said that negotiations are still underway with regard to the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, which was scheduled for March 13th in Las Vegas. He later told The LA Times, ‘It might be best to visit this fight later in 2010.”
The Pacquiao/Mayweather fight would have earned more than $40 million for each, a career high for both, but talks between the two camps broke down shortly after Pacquiao beat Miguel Cotto by TKO in the 12th round on November 14th. Mayweather wanted to have both fighters tested for drugs via urinalysis and blood work at random. Pacquiao would only agree to random urinalysis, with his concern that taking blood would weaken him. Sigh. I would have loved to have seen this fight. I hope that it comes to fruition.
