The sport of American football is once again mourning the death of Cincinnati Bengals’ Chris Henry, who died on Thursday as a result of injuries sustained when he fell yesterday from a van driven by his girlfriend. Keep reading to know more about this tragic news plus video and photos below.
Henry was just 26 when he died, but he could not overcome the severity of injury and according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the events occurred as a result of an argument with his fiancée.
The Bengals wide receiver died early on Thursday morning, but we didn’t know more details of the type of injuries sustained when he fell from the moving vehicle. Henry was inactive with the team due to a broken arm injury.
The young Bengals player was transferred on Wednesday to a local hospital after being found in a residential street in the city where the accident occurred.
Police said the dispute began in a house not far from where Henry was found. The player jumped into the vehicle in which his fiancée was running and fell soon after, no more details are known of how it happened.
Police did not reveal the identity of the woman, and so far no charges have been filed.
Rosalyn Harrington, the police spokesman said that the detectives who have been assigned to the case, couldn’t give no further information.
It is known that Henry’s girlfriend called Loleini Tonga, and Chris Henry had been raising three children. On MySpace, Tonga is identified as "The Lady of C. Henry," and appears in a photo with a person who appears to be Henry.
The deceased player broke his left forearm during a victory over the Baltimore Ravens on November 8. He underwent surgery and was put on the injured reserve list, which ended his season.
The Bengals (9-4), is experiencing their best season since winning 11 games in 2005 and are leaders in the North Division of the American Conference (AFC).
Bengals owner Mike Brown said in a statement: "I had a future that we all felt proud and especially Chris himself." We felt a great pain in our hearts and we will miss him. "
For its part, the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), Roger Goodell, also said through a statement it received the tragic news about Henry’s death left a great sadness and marked a day of pain.
"Our thoughts and prayers to the family of Chris and the Bengals, who know they have our support at this difficult time," said Goodell.
