By now you’ve heard the news of the Detroit marathon – 3 died, 2 during the run and the other after finishing the half marathon. Such a sad story. Read more about it below.
It was the 32nd annual event for the Detroit marathon. 3 died; 36-year-old Daniel Langdon, 65-year-old Rick Brown and 26-year-old Jon Fenlon. All three died within a 16 minute time frame.
Autopsies on all three of the men have concluded, but it still is unknown what caused their deaths. The Wayne Country Medical Examiner’s Office has sent tissue and blood sampling for more testing, as well as a toxicology test to pinpoint what caused the three runners’ deaths. It could be several more weeks before those test results come back.
Langdon, collapsed between the 11th and 12th mile at approximately 9:00 AM. Brown fell minutes later in the same area. Later, Fenlon collapsed after having completed the half marathon. It has been reported that there were six medical stations throughout the marathon course, and medical personnel were on hand immediately after each of the runners’ collapse. All three runners were given state of the art resuscitation. There is speculation that Brown died after hitting his head from his fall.
There were over 19,000 runners who signed up for the event, each of whom were asked to sign a medical release form before the marathon. The three who died were said to have been relatively healthy.
That is the latest news on the Detroit marathon; 3 died of unknown causes, but hopefully we will have some answers soon. I’ve included a related video below.
