David Letterman’s wife, Regina Lasko, obviously is going through a rough time right now dealing with the extortion attempt on her hubby. He apologized to her on air last night. Read more below.
In his first public comments since revealing on his show last Thursday that he was the victim of an extortion plot by Robert Joe Halderman, Letterman apologized to his wife and staff on air for his sexual relationships with staff members.
He first apologized to his staff:
“I’m terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position. Inadvertently, I just wasn’t thinking ahead. And, moreover, the staff here has been wonderfully supportive to me, not just through this furor, but through all the years that we’ve been on television and especially all the years here at CBS, so, again, my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I’ve gotten myself involved in.”
He went on to focus on his wife and how much the ordeal has affected her. Lasko became David Letterman’s wife in March of this year, and the two have reportedly been together for several years. Wiki notes they have been together since 1986. Their son Harry was born in 2003.
“She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it. And at that point, there’s only two things that can happen: Either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you, folks, I got my work cut out for me.”
Although he did throw in several jokes throughout his monologue and his on air apology on last night’s show, he did seem sincere, especially when speaking of his wife. One can only imagine how hurt and betrayed she must be feeling right now.
The suspect in the extortion plot, Robert Joe Halderman, was arrested and has been suspended from his job as producer on the CBS show, 48 Hours. He also was the former boyfriend of Stephanie Birkitt, a Letterman assistant with whom Letterman had a sexual relationship with in the past.
