Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (see photos and video below) have been tapped to play at halftime during Super Bowl XLII February 3rd in Glendale, Arizona.
Other groups that were said to be in the running for the coveted halftime performance included the Eagles and Bon Jovi.
A source close to the negotiations said that choosing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to play at halftime is just the latest in the NFL’s stand on picking acts that appeal to an older audience, rather than risk another “wardrobe malfunction” fiasco that happened with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake.
Pre-game entertainment has still yet to be announced, but since the Super Bowl is being played in Glendale at the University of Phoenix Stadium, it is rumored that Glendale native Jordin Sparks is the obvious choice to sing the National Anthem. Fox, the network that airs American Idol, is also broadcasting the Super Bowl next year.
