Can you picture former NFL player Herschel Walker a Martial Arts star? Hard to believe, but true. Read more about this developing story here.
Hmmm. Signing Herschel Walker as your next martial arts star makes you wonder what’s going on over there at Strikeforce since the 47-year-old has had no experience whatsover in a cage. Okay, he does have a black belt (fifth degree) in Tae Kwon Do, but still.
The NFL Hall of Famer has reportedly signed a contract with Strikeforce (a multifight agreement to fight in the heavyweight division) and will start training next month with Bob Cook in San Jose, California at the American Kickboxing Academy. Walker said:
“I will go in there and test myself against any 20 year old, I know there will be naysayers and I’m fine with that. I want to prove to people who sit on a couch and don’t do anything but criticize other people that, if you’re a true athlete or martial artist, you’re not old until you can’t get up and walk around anymore. MMA fighters are said to be some of the best athletes in the world, my plan at the age of 47 is to show the world I am still one of the best athletes as well.”
So in addition to Walker’s black belt in Tae Kwon Do, he does have training in kenpo and muay thai. But at 47 years old? He’ll do 12 weeks of training which translates into no fights until 2010. He’ll turn 48 in March. Wait, how old is Randy Couture? Oh yeah, 46. Just sayin’. We all want to root for the underdog. I dunno. On the fence on this one. Will you watch his first MMA fight? Will we see the headlines, “Herschel Walker, Martial Arts Star”? Leave me your thoughts in the comment section below. I’ve also put up a classic video of Herschel Walker talking about his workout regimen. Looks like he’ll need to be doing much more than push ups and sit ups. Heh.
