The other cities hopeful of hosting the Games are Rio De Janeiro, Tokyo and Madrid. The vote will take place on October 2, 2009 when the International Olympic Committee meets in Copenhagen. Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times reveals that President Obama has told Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley he may not be able to travel with the delegation due to his involvement with the health care reform legislation and that the First Lady will head the delegation to Copenhagen.
Regarding the choice of Chicago as location for the 2016 Olympics, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, who will also be going to Copenhagen, said:
“As President Obama has said, hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Chicago would be a valuable opportunity for our nation to welcome the world to our shores, and strengthen our friendships across the globe. I know that it would serve as a beacon of hope and lift the aspirations of so many young people in Chicago, in America and across the world even higher.”
Regarding the Michelle Obama Olympics bid in Copenhagen, Mayor Daley said in a statement, according to the Chicago Tribune:
“As a lifelong resident of our city, Michelle’s passion for Chicago is contagious. This is not just Chicago’s bid, it is America’s bid.”
The publication goes on to note that the heads of state of the competing countries will be going to Copenhagen: King Juan Carlos of Spain and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil and “possibly” the Japanese royal family.
