Video of the Rafael Nadal kiss by fan Noam Aorta at the U.S. Open has gone viral. What is it with these crazy fans? Read more about the story below.
After Tuesday night’s win over Gael Monfils in the 4th round, a fan, identified as Noam Aorta, rushed the court, hugged and gave Rafael Nadal a kiss.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight, after Nadal’s victory over France’s Gael Monfils. Aorta, who was in the stands, simply wanted to show Nadal some love. He told an officer after his arrest:
“Nadal was right there. I had to. I had a few drinks. In my country kissing another man is no big deal.”
Aorta is an Israeli national who lives in Briarwood, New York. If he is convicted he could spend up to a year in jail and shell out $5,000 in fines. He was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court and told he had to give up his Israeli passport.
Nadal just shrugged the incident off, saying, “For me it wasn’t a problem. The guy was really nice. He was a great fan. He said, ‘I love you,’ and he kiss me.”
Tim Curry, spokesman for the U.S. Open, said that they were reviewing the incident and will decide if any changes need to be made regarding their current security operations.
Meanwhile, Nadal faces Fernando Gonzalez, currently ranked 11th, in quarterfinals play today, with coverage starting at 7:00 PM EST on ESPN2.
