The Phil Dawson Field Goal (Video)

November 19, 2007

Phil Dawson celebrates his game tying field goal.

Phil Dawson kicked probably the most controversial field goal of his life Sunday (see the video below) to tie his Cleveland Browns with the Baltimore Ravens. Then, during overtime, he would kick the winning field goal to beat the Ravens 33-30.

As you can see from the video, the original call on the kick that would tie the game was ruled as no good, with several Ravens players already headed to the locker room to celebrate their victory. The officials then conferred with one another and were in agreement that the ball hit the left upright, hit the curved center support behind the crossbar, then bounced out. The refs would then rule that the field goal was actually good. This tied the game 30-30, and they went into overtime. Dawson would kick the 33-yard winning field goal for the Browns, giving them its fourth win in five games. Their record now stands at 6-4.

Brian Billick, the head coach for the Baltimore Ravens, is now protesting the reversed call.
