Dinara Safina presently is No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world according to the WTA rankings. Performances during the past year comprise the data on which the rankings are based. The 23-year-old Russian player has been runner-up in three Grand Slam singles tournaments; previously she has advanced no farther than the semifinals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open which makes her 0-3 in major tournament finals. In 2007 she was the winner, along with Nathalie Dechy, of the US Open women’s doubles. Additionally she was the silver medalist in women’s singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Defending champion Serena Williams, seeded No. 2, as noted, this year, has won the U.S. Open three times and she has won three of the last four Grand Slam singles titles. Throughout her career she has claimed the Grand Slam 11 times. Seeded No. 3 is Willliams’ sister Venus Williams who has twice won the U.S. Open.

In an interview, tournament director Jim Curley said that although there had been discussion of the U.S. Tennis Association to rank Williams No. 1 instead of making Dinara Safina U.S. Open Seed No. 1:

“[B]ut it never got to the point where we were seriously intending to not follow the rankings.”

Also announced; five-time defending U.S. Open champion Roger Federer is top-seeded as the No. 1 men’s player this year.

The tournament which takes place in Flushing Meadows, New York will begin this year on August 31, 2009 giving the 23-year-old Safina an opportunity to add a major tournament victory to her resume.
