The 2009 World Track and Field Championships are set to kick-off today Saturday, August 09. Read more about the story, plus browse pictures and video here.
You could say that in the same way Michael Phelps rekindled public interest in swimming, runner Usain Bolt did that for track and field. At the recent Olympics he set a new world record for the 100 and 200-meter runs.
There has been much speculation as to whether or not American favorite Tyson Gay, who was unable to compete in the Olympics, will be able to hold his own against the seemingly unbeatable Bolt. Assuming that everything will go according to plan the two will face each other for the first time in over a year at the world track and field championships, which will begin on Saturday in Berlin and will end on August 23.
The Olympic face-off between Bolt and Gay never occurred because Gay pulled his left hamstring muscle a month before the games in trials. Now the previously injured runner says that he is in the best shape of his life, although he is still suffering from a groin injury that may require postseason surgery.
