Plaxico Burress was indicted by a grand jury today, stemming from weapons charges last November 29th when he shot himself in the thigh at the Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan. Read more about the story plus photos and video below.
Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was indicted by a grand jury today, with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment.
If Buress is convicted, he could serve a minimum of 3 1/2 years in prison. Benjamin Brafman, Burress’ attorney, was disappointed by the indictment, saying:
“When you have the mayor and the district attorney both publicly demanding a maximum prison sentence, it was perhaps too much to hope for the grand jury to conduct a sympathetic review of the unique facts of this sad case.”
Burress was at Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan on the evening of November 29th, when a gun he had tucked into his waistband fell; the gun fired accidentally and shot him in the right thigh. Burress’ former Giants teammate, Antonio Pierce, was with Burress at the club and took him to the hospital. Pierce later took the gun to his own home, rather than Burress’ residence, but arrangements were later made to take the gun back to Burress’ home. Pierce was not indicted on any charges. The gun was not licensed in New York or New Jersey, Burress’ home state. Burress did have a license to carry a weapon in Florida, but that expired in May 2008.
Burress is currently free on $100,000 bail.
