Paula Radcliffe, who gave birth in January, ran her first marathon today in two years. What an amazing feat to have come back and win! She completed the race in 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 9 seconds. This is her second New York City marathon win, her last title was back in 2004.
Paula Radcliffe was born on December 17, 1973 in Davenham, Cheshire. She attended Little Leigh Primary School in Barnton, and moved to Oakley, Bedfordshire at 12 years of age where she attended Sharnbrook Upper School and Community College. She was a member of the Bedford Athletic Club.
She attended Loughborough University and was successful in cross country events, having won the 1992 World Junior title. Her 1994 season came to a quick halt, as she was hampered with a foot injury, but came back, with a fifth place finish in both the World Championships in 1995 and the 1996 Olympic Games. She did receive a silver medal in the 1999 World Championships in Athletics, but medaled out in the 2000 Olympic Games and 2001 World Championships.
Paula would end up moving on to competing in marathons, and won the 2002 London Marathon. She would go on to compete in several more marathons, winning and breaking records.
She was favored to win the gold medal in the marathon of the 2004 Olympics, but sustained a leg injury just two weeks prior to the event and was put on high doses of anti-inflammatory drugs. This had quite an effect on her stomach, as it was unable to absorb food. This resulted in her lack of energy and carbs in her system. She competed in the event, but ended up withdrawing after 36km. She tried to compete in the 10,000 meters, but dropped out with 8 laps left to go.
Paula came back to win the 2004 New York City Marathon, then won the 2005 London Marathon as well. Paula would win her first gold medal at the World Championships in 2005.
She took time off in the 2006 season, as she was pregnant with her first child. Isla was born on January 17, 2007. She competed in the Great North Run, which is a half marathon, on September 30, 2007 and took second place. Earlier today she won the New York City Marathon.
