Elena Vesnina is in the news as the Russian beat Dominika Cibulkova, No. 14 seed, Friday in the third round, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in an exhausting match that lasted a little over three hours.
“I am so happy. Wimbledon is something special. I love this tournament because of the tradition and the atmosphere.
“You always want to do well here and enjoy it because it is the most popular tournament in the world. I’m delighted with my game and my coach is even happier than me.”
It will be the battle of the Elenas Monday as Vesnina meets her Russian compatriot, Elena Dementieva in the fourth round.
As a biography, Elena Vesnina was born on August 1, 1986 in Lvov, Ukraine, so her age is 22. She stands five feet seven inches and weighs 132 pounds.
Her mother Irina introduced Elena to tennis when she was just seven years old and played while in school as well. Her former coach, Jurij Vasiljevich, had also coached Maria Sharapova. She currently is coached by Andrei Chesnokov.
Elena turned pro in 2002, and during that same year had played on the ITF Circuit in Egypt.
From 2003 to 2005 she competed in several ITF circuit events and was successful in winning several doubles titles. In her singles career, she was the winner of the Balaschika and Tbilisi events in 2003. She was a semifinalist in the Forest Hills and Tashkent events in 2007 as well as the Ponte Vedra Beach event in 2009. She made it to the quarterfinals at the Tashkent and Quebec City events in 2005, the Strasbourg and Forest Hills events in 2006, the Gold Coast, Strasbourg and Cincinnati events in 2007, the Hobart event in 2008 and thus far in 2009, the Dubai and Charleston events.
