Sabine Lisicki is in the news as the 19-year-old German beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 7-5, in the third round of Wimbledon Saturday.
It was a shocking win for Lisicki, beating out the reigning French Open champion. Lisicki told reporters:
“I just kept telling myself, ‘You have nothing to lose; just go for your shots,’ That’s what I did in the end. It turned out to be good.”
She will meet ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) in the fourth round on Monday.
As a biography, Sabine Lisicki was born on September 22, 1989 in Troisdorf, Germany. Her parents, Dr. Richard and Elisabeth Lisicki, are Polish immigrants. She stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 154 pounds. She currently lives in Bradenton, Florida, where she trains at the famed Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy.
Sabine was first introduced to tennis by her father when she was 7 years of age. He currently serves as her coach. She played in her first event on the ITF Circuit in 2004. She turned pro in 2006. She won two titles on the ITF circuit in 2007.
She had a successful year in 2008, beginning with the Australian Open. She beat #16 seed Dinara Safina and Mariya Koryttseva to make it to the third round, but was defeated by Caroline Wozniacki.
At the Miami 2008 Sony Ericsson Open, she made it to the fourth round of the event, but was beat by Elena Dementieva in the next round.
During Wimbledon 2008, she was out in the first round after being beaten by Marion Bartoli.
In 2009, she reached the second round of the Australian Open, but lost to Samantha Stosur. She competed at the Cellular South Cup in Memphis, Tennessee, making it to the semi-finals, but ended up losing to Victoria Azarenka. At the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, she made it to the final and beat 5th seed Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 6-4, for her first singles title. She will face Wozniacki in the fourth round of Wimbledon play on Monday.
