Melissa ‘Missy’ Giove is in the news today as the former professional downhill mountain biker was arrested on Tuesday, along with Eric Canori, and charged with marijuana distribution in Wilton, New York.
Authorities received word that Giove and Canori were allegedly working together to distribute marijuana. Investigators trailed Giove (who lives in Chesapeake, Virginia) as she landed at Albany County airport and took a cab to a hotel where she met an unidentified informant. According to the NY Daily News, she then picked up a truck and trailer, where she drove to Canori’s residence in Wilton. Some items in the trailer were then unloaded into his home. She was later stopped by investigators, where 400 pounds of marijuana were found in the trailer as well as in Canori’s home.
If Giove and Canori are found guilty, they face a $2 million fine and up to 40 years in prison.
As a biography, Melissa ‘Missy’ Giove was born in 1972, so her age is 37. She is also known by her nickname, The Missile. She formerly was a professional downhill mountain bike racer, making a name for herself as the first female superstar in the world of mountain bike racing.
In 1994, Giove won the World Champion title and had World Cup season titles in 1997 and 1998. She was the National Title champ from 1999-2001. She has a phenomenal 14 NORBA downhill record wins. She retired from racing in 2003.
