French Open Intruder Jaume Marquet Cot, also known as Jimmy Jump, accosted Roger Federer during the French Open final Sunday. It happened after Federer was leading Robin Soderling of Sweden, 6-1, 2-1. Jimmy Jump ran onto the court and rushed towards Federer, attempting to place a red beret on him and carrying a Barcelona soccer flag.
“All of a sudden I heard the crowd, and I looked over and he jumped over the fence or something,” Federer said afterward. “That gave me a fright, just, like, seeing him so close right away.”
Understandably Federer was a bit shaken by the incident, but he obviously regained his composure and went on to beat Soderling, 6-1, 7-6, 6-4.
“Looking back, it definitely threw me out of my rhythm a little bit,” Federer said. “One game later, I thought that maybe I should have sat down and taken a minute or two to kind of reflect on what just happened. Was that real or what? But I don’t know. . . . I wanted to play on and whatever, get over it. But it was a touch scary, yes.”
