Cameroon national Samuel Eto’o and Argentine national Lionel Messi scored in the Champions League final.
Eto’o scored in the 10th minute to gave Barcelona a very important lead early on. Manchester United simply couldn’t keep up to the attacking strategies of the Spanish club and played an average game, played in the grand Olympic Stadium in Rome.
Christiano Ronaldo, in particular, looked out of form and performed pretty badly… at least not up to the levels of a FIFA World Soccer Player of the Year. Sir Alex Ferguson will not be happy about this performance, I’m sure. It’s not that they lost… it was a bad loss. But, then there were some lucky chances also, which didn’t go through.
Samuel Eto’o was the star of the evening right through the game after he scored on a superb trick shot. Lionel Messi kept trying to attack his level best along with French Thierry Henry, and got the much-deserved success in the 70th minute. He deviated a good pass on a header right through the United goal.
Barcelona came to the final beating Chelsea, under not-so favorable circumstances, in the semi-finals but they showed true class in the game that really mattered.
With this win, Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola, 38, becomes the youngest manager ever to win a Champions League title and also the first in his debut season.
