Manchester United won the 2009 English Premiership title by holding off Arsenal to a draw in their game last night. United just needed a point to maintain the winning lead over Liverpool. This is their 18th League Championship which ties the top all-time mark by Liverpool.
Manchester played an average game against Arsenal which ended 0-0 without much flair at the Old Trafford stadium. The crowd erupted after the game and the United were given the glistering league cup.
United boss Sir Alex Fergusson was visibly elated as it was Manchester’s 11th Premier League title under his reign since 1986.
“It makes you want to go on forever,” said the 67-year-old Ferguson, who already has put off retirement once.
United goal-keeper Edwin van der Sar was at his best for his team and warded off two very good attempts at the goal by the desperate Arsenal forwards. Liverpool, who were six points behind Man U before the game, now have no chances of matching their 87 points with just two games to go.
“Thankfully, we got the job done today,” striker Wayne Rooney said. “The last few years have been unbelievable.”
As the fireworks exploded, the EPL trophy was carried into the ground by four army soldiers who had returned from the war in Afghanistan.
In other leagues, Real Madrid killed their chances of another La Liga title by losing out to Villarreal 3-2. The loss made sure Barcelona won their first 19th Spanish league title in three years. This is their 19th league title. In Italy, Inter Milan won the Serie A title for the fourth straight year.
