Superstar filly Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness Stakes 2009 on Saturday to become the first filly since 1924 to achieve the feat. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird finished second. Check out Rachel Alexandra Preakness Stakes video below.
Rachel was ridden by Calvin Borel, the same jockey who rode Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby and who decided to make the switch this time to the filly, which was made favorite by the bookies by giving 9-5 odds.
“Rachel Alexandra led by a head at the quarter and half-mile poles. She stretched it to a half-length at the three-quarters pole. She was ahead by four lengths going down the stretch. In the end, the 9-5 favorite won by a length in her first race against the boys.”
Nellie Morse was the last filly to win the prestigious 134-years old race in 1924.
The great race was dubbed the ‘Battle Of The Sexes’ after the undefeated filly was given the top odds against all other colts. This is the first time Rachel was racing against all colts. She proved her worth and the fact that what it takes to be a champion certainly doesn’t depend on your gender.
Rachel is currently riding high on six straight wins and is undefeated this year. She’ll next be taking on a shot at the Belmont Stakes in three weeks. Rider Borel will be aiming for a Triple Crown, having already won the Kentucky Derby.
In the other standings, Musket Man finished third and Flying Private and Big Drama followed up. Alexandra won $660,000 for the win out a total purse of $1.1m.
