Meet Rachel Alexandra, an American Thoroughbred filly racehorse who is being touted as the favorite for the 2009 Preakness Stakes. Alexandra is the first filly to be given the status since 1988 and will be competing against 12 colts for the title, in what is now being called as the ‘Battle Of the Sexes’. See photos, video and a biography of Rachel Alexandra here.
Rachel is on a five-game winning streak and is no doubt the best filly in the mid-west region. She has been given the odds of 8-5, making it the favorite for the 134th Preakness at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday.
“She has been special since day one,” assistant trainer Scott Blasi said Wednesday. “She probably doesn’t have a lot left to prove against fillies.”
“She is definitely the one to beat,” said Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who has entered Flying Private and Luv Guv in the race.
As a biography, Rachel Alexandra was foaled January 29, 2006 in Kentucky so she is 3 years old. She was bred by Dolphus Morrison and was sired by Medaglia d’Oro, a multiple Grade I winner.
Rachel announced her arrival on the top stage by winning the Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs in November last year, a win which set a new stakes record. Ridden by Calvin Borel, Alexandra is undefeated this year. She won the Martha Washington Stakes, Fair Grounds Oaks, the Fantasy Stakes and then most recently the Grade I Kentucky Oaks by a long margin.
Rachel was transferred to Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables on in the first week of May 2009. She will now be trained by Steve Asmussen.
