Former Australian rugby league star Matthew Johns became involved in a sex scandal recently when a Christchurch girl alleged that she had group sex with Johns and his fellow Cronulla Sharks players when they toured New Zealand to play a pre-season game.
The lady, who was 19 at the time of the incident, has spoken to the ABC television show Four Corners and the episode will air on Monday.
“I only remember one player definitely, it was Matthew Johns. He laughed and he joked and was very loud and boisterous,” she told Four Corners.
“Every time I looked up there would be more and more people in the room and there’s lots of guys in the room watching – maybe two or three were on the bed that were doing stuff to me,” she said.
The interesting part is that Johns admitted to the incident and said that the whole thing was consensual.
“It happened seven years ago and caused great pain to my wife and family,” Johns told Nine.
“It took us a long time to get through it and it pains me that they have to go through it again.”
The allegations were first raised in 2002 by a woman employee of the Racecourse Hotel where the players stayed during their away tour. Johns enjoyed a great status in the Australian sports world and is considered to be one of the best rugby players the country had.
He currently works as a commentator on the Nine network and is the face of the NRL’s membership drive advertisement.
NRL chief executive David Gallop refused to comment on the story and Matthew told the police that the group sex with the teenager girl was not forced but consensual and so, should not be taken seriously.
