The 2009 European Champions League final will be played between Manchester United and Barcelona in Rome. Barcelona won in a dramatic fashion last night, beating Chelsea 1-1 in their away match to capture that elusive second final spot.
The match, marred with controversies and allegedly wrong decisions by the Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo, saw Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta scoring the decider in the third minute of the second-half injury time.
“Until the referee blows (the final whistle) you have to have belief,” Iniesta said. “If it had been the fifth minute, I might have sent the ball into the second tier of the stand but I fired with all my heart and the ball entered in the only place it could have.”
Chelsea fans were rightfully frustrated at the final result because they weren’t awarded at least two fair penalty-kicks. The score would have been 2-0 in Chelsea’s favor it it was not for the wrong decisions by the referee. Players were obviously angry.
“It’s a . . . disgrace,” Chelsea forward Didier Drogba yelled to television cameras.
Meanwhile, Manchester United progressed in a comprehensive fashion, beating Arsenal in their away match 3-1 on the other night to capture the first final spot. Park Ji-sung gave the lead in early minutes and Christinao Ronaldo was spot on target with his two second-half goals.
The only matter of worry for Sir Alex Fergusson was that defender Darren Fletcher was shown the red card and he will therefore miss the final match.
The match was always going to be one of the best contested of the tournament so-far. Emotions ran high and there are reports that an Arsenal fan (Suleiman Alphonso Omondi) hung himself after watching his team lose to the arch rivals.
“We were watching the match at Bamba 70 pub, and when Arsenal was defeated, Suleiman just walked out in protest and he was crying,” Calvin Otieno, one of his friends, said.
“We didn’t know he was going to hang himself until this morning when we received the reports.”
The final of the Champions League will be played in Rome on May 27th.
