Matthew Stafford Is Detroit Lions Quarterback

April 27, 2009

Meet Matthew Stafford, an American professional football player who is a quarterback for the Detroit Lions of NFL. Stafford has been selected as the number one overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. See a video and a biography of Matthew Stafford here.

Matthew found himself on the receiving end of what is now called as the most expensive rookie contract ever offered. The Lions are paying $72m for a six-year contract with over $41m in guarantees! This team is sure desperate for a quality franchise quarterback after a 0-16 season.

“He is a baby-faced kid with a strong arm and an awful lot of pressure on him taking over a team that is 31-97 going back to 2001.

For that kind of money, he should give some back if he’s not playing.

To try and put this in perspective, when the Dallas Cowboys were sold in 1984, the team and the lease to Texas Stadium went for $85 million. Bob Tisch paid $75 million for 50% of the Giants in 1991. That money bought franchises.”

As a biography, Matthew Stafford was born on February 7, 1988 in Tampa, Florida so his age is 21. He attended Highland Park High School in Dallas and was said to be one of the best high school quarterbacks in the country in the class of 2006. He led the team to a 15-0 season.

Stafford was chosen to the Parade Magazine All-America Team and has won admiration for his strong arms. He went to the University of Georgia and became the starting QB for the Bulldogs in his freshman year. He was nominated to the Heisman Favorites Others To Watch list and his performances led the team to be No.1 in preseason coaches poll.

Stafford was named the 2009 Capital One Bowl MVP and holds the record for most touchdown passes in a year for the university.
