AB de Villiers became the first centurian of the on-going second season of the IPL. He hit 105 runs n.o. to propel Delhi Daredevils to a total of 189 runs in their stipulated 20 overs in the ninth match of the hugely popular most expensive cricket league in the world. The Daredevils were playing against the Chennai Super Kings.
Earlier, Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag departed early to leave the team stranded at 8/2 in 2 overs. However, Villiers and Dilshan made the rescue act and added 68 runs for the third wicket.
The promising South African batsman was the force behind the dominating total of his team.
Update: AB’s performance saved the match for the team as they went on to beat Chennai by just 9 runs. It was most thrilling match of the tournament so fa with the game going to last ball. Daniel Vettori took 2 wickets and effected two run-outs to collapse the lower batting order of the Super Kings.
As a biography, AB de Villiers was born on 17 February 1984 in Pretoria, South Africa so his age is 25. He played for the Carrickfergus Cricket Club in Ireland as a young player and moved on to become a Test player for the South African national team. He made his Test debut on 16 December 2004 against England.
AB, as he is known in the cricketing world, has so far scored 3,558 runs in 52 Tests at an average of 43. He is the second fastest South African to reach 1000 runs after Graeme Pollock. He has also played a lot of One Dayers for his team and has scored three centuries with an average of 38. Besides, national team and Delhi, he also plays for the Northern Titans in the local T20 league.
Villiers was roped in by the Daredevils during the auction before the first season of IPL last year and was not considered a good T20 player. He scored the first century of the IPL 2009 today and saved the day for the Daredevils, who were down with both their openers getting out under 10 runs.
In his personal life, AB is a persistent Christian and has two brothers, Jan and Wessels. He is considered to be a born sportsman as he played cricket, golf, rugby and tennis with the same passion when he was young.
