Jeff Karstens has scored the final spot on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ starting rotation. Clearly happy and still aware of the work ahead of him, Karstens stated “There’s still some stuff I’ve got to work on, we all know that. They’ve given me this opportunity and it’s my job to run with it. If I don’t, I know somebody else is going to be waiting in the wings.”
Karsten pitched seven games with an ERA of 6.17. He allowed 30 hits with eight walks in 23 1-3 innings. Read Jeff Karstens’ biography below and see video after the jump.
As a biography Jeffrey Wayne Karstens was born on September 24, 1982 in San Diego, California. Karstens is a right handed player who stands at 6’3″ and weighs 185 lbs. He graduated from Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley, California. He was MVP in his senior year.
After graduation, the Pittsburgh Pirates star attended Texas Tech University where he played on the Red Raiders. In 2003 during the Major League Baseball Drafts Karstens was picked up by the New York Yankees. In 2005 he played on the Yankees and the Trenton Thunder.
From 2006-2008 Karstens’ career was a struggle. With his numbers all over the place, a demotion to Double-A Trenton and a 60 day spot on the disabled list, Karstens’ career was up and down.
In 2008 Jeff Karstens was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
